Bower NTV

NTV or No TV week is a program sponsored by the Bower PTA. This program supports quality family time as an alternative to watching TV. Incentives are given to remain TV-Free for a total of 40 out of about 180 school days, in 5-day intervals, scheduled once a month. This means no TV at all during the designated weeks – including all TV access video games (ex. Nintendo). This does not include computer use.

New this year we have added NTV Challenges. These are family orientated challenges that the student can do with their families during NTV week. By completing the challenge the student will receive a small additional incentive.

We have outlined 7 day weeks as NTV weeks - normally NTV would begin on Sunday evenings and end on Friday mornings. This year we are leaving it up to the families to which days they would like to start and end on, as long as the student completes 5 CONSECUTIVE days of NO TV. The dates of the 2007 - 2008 school year:

HOW NTV WORKS

1.   Fill out Validation slips for the nine months of the NTV program. Sign and return to school on the conclusion of each NTV week. validation slips
   
2. An email sent to bowerntv@comcast.net stating your child’s name, grade, teacher, and dates participated will also be accepted as validation if received by the first TUESDAY following the completion of each NTV week.
   
3. Incentives will be awarded for participation in the program. Validation slips MUST be turned in by the first TUESDAY following the completion of each NTV week.
   
4. When you turn in a signed certificate, you will become a member of NTV.
   
5. Students participating in 7 out of the 9 weeks of NTV will earn FREE admission to Bower School Family Bowling Night or Kane County Cougars game at the end of the school year. (or a subsequent event)
   
6. Watch the Bower BUZZ for any scheduled events to be held in conjunction with NTV week.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. “How am I going to persuade my child to participate?”
   Offer incentives such as an ice-cream outing, trip to local museum, sleepover, etc. at the week’s end.
   
2.   “What if I lose my coupon?”
   You can validate your child’s participation in a few ways
1. Print off NTV validation slip
2. Write a note in place of the coupon with Student name, dates, teacher, grade
3. Send an email to bowerntv@comcast.net with student name, grade, teacher, and dates participated
   
3.   “What if I forget to turn in a coupon?”
   Late coupons will be tallied in with student’s total hours for the year. However, students turning in late coupons will not be guaranteed an incentive.
   
4.  “When can you join NTV?”
   You can join NTV at any time throughout the school year. Partaking in the NTV week and returning the validation coupon earns your child a NTV membership and that month’s incentive.
   
5.  “Mom, Dad, How can I survive without my favorite program?”
   Using a blank video or DVR parents can record these programs for their child to view at a later date.

 A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR NTV WEEK

GAME NIGHT – include the entire family for night of board games, charades . .

FAMILY PICNIC – Picnic at home or the park

OPEN GYM – join a gym such as Warrenville’s own Park District, or Lifetime

READ STORIES OUTLOUD

FAMIILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES – family walks, kick ball games, baseball, fishing, etc.

HAVE A “NO ELECTRCITY NIGHT” – eat by candlelight, make sandwiches or cookout on a grill, read stories out loud to each other, play games etc.

WORK ON FAMILY PROJECTS – family trees, collages, decorations for a holiday
